Wacky Week 1 and 2

Week 1

Monday: To start off the term, we had a whole school Powhiri. The Kapa Haka group sang a song in front of the school. Mrs Hanson (Ms Falkner) taught us some really fun art called "Through my camera". The whole class worked on them really hard and now they look great!

Tuesday: In the afternoon we did athletics. We started with long jump and finished with shot put. We also did our daily routine of writing, reading and maths. For writing, we started planning our narratives. For reading, we started our new text on fiction stories. And for maths, we started learning about fractions.

Wednesday: The time our class was all waiting for was the announcement of what bunk room we were in for camp. We had at least 1 friend in our bunk rooms and most of us were happy with what the results were. Everybody is excited for camp.

Thursday: We went to the hall for singing. We sounded amazing altogether. Some people got house points for singing exceptionally well. Once again we did what we always do. Maths, reading and writing.

Friday: We did athletics again but this time we did relays and high jump. Speaking of relays, Mrs Hanson put a twist to it. We had to crab dance, run backwards, grape vine, side step, and had to run properly. For high jump, we played last man standing, but time ran out and we had to run back to class.

Week 2

Monday: We did our 4 pieces of art in 4 days. We started this with koru art, where you use koru to make a picture. Then we did our maths PAT test. Most people got very high scores which is good for our classes' reputation.

Tuesday: We kept doing the 4 pieces of art in 4 days. This time we did a 1/4 circle coloured in with hot and cold colours. Some people went to sports extension and they missed out on art. We also did discus and sprints for athletics.

Wednesday: We did our reading PAT test. More than 1/2 the class got top points. We continued our pieces of art by Printmaking, where you go around the school finding different textures to trace with crayon. Then you cut out your favourite pieces and glue them to a big sheet of paper.

Thursday: We had a assembly with Mrs Howison so she could give away the ICAS, AMT, and OPS awards. A special mention to Ryota Niwa from Rm 26 for getting nearly every question right with a total of 23/25.

Friday: Don't really know what's going on because today is Friday!

So that's what's been going on in Rm 27 these 2 weeks :)

INNOVATION INQUIRIES

Last week we presented the Innovation Inquiries we worked on at home, on our own or with a buddy.
We came up with questions about different innovations that we were interested in.

Miss Falkner was so impressed with what we came up with! If you would like to see them more closely, some of them are on display in Room 27!

Kate and Beth's question was: How have punishments and rewards changed at home since the 1900s?
* The no smacking law came into NZ in 2007
* Punishments have become less cruel
* Punishments now are usually to do with confiscating technology

James R and Owen's question was: How have pencils changed through time?
* They have changed from lead to graphite
* Pencils are safer because they don't contain lead, which can get into your organs
* They used to be encased in string and now they are encased in wood

Dom's question was: How have computer games changed since the first computer game?
* Pong was the first game, which was a big arcade game
* Now games are a lot smaller
* You used to control them with joysticks and now you use keyboards and mouse controls

Jordyn and Niamh's question was: How have punishments at home and school changed since 1960?
* Boys were picked on more than girls around the 1960s
* In the 1970s, a common punishment was to sit in the corner on a chair
* Teachers don't slap kids on the hand anymore

Grace and Triny's question was: How has food and drink changed in the last 75 years?
* In the future, the girls predict that fresh food will become more uncommon
* In the past, there was a lot less processed food
* They used to wrap fish and chips in newspaper.

Maddie (not pictured), Piper and Issy's question was: How have cars changed since the first car?
* Cars used to be a lot simpler, with not as many flash features
* Changed from horse and cart to cars
* The first cars had pedals and no engines

Myah and Mia's question was: How have phones changed through time?
* Most phones are now cordless and wireless
* The first phone had a dial and 2 separate pieces
* Now, many phones are touch screen and have a lot of features

Jackson's question was: How has Nintendo changed through time?
* There have been many different types of Nintendo systems
* The first thing Nintendo invented were cards
* Nintendo has changed from very bulky to slimline

Bella and Alice's question was: How have punishments and rewards at school since 1930?
* You used to get the cane, which is now illegal
* If you did something good in the 1940s, a common reward was a family picnic
* If you went to Selwyn House in the 1980s, a punishment was sitting in front of the whole school assembly

Tyler and Brad's question was: How have planes changed since the first plane?
* The first plane only stayed in the air for 12 seconds!
* The Wright Brothers invented the first plane and it was made of wood and cloth
* Now, planes are much safer and study as they are made of aluminium

Estella and Aliana's (photo coming soon!) question was: How has medicine changed since 1900?

We are also working on a class inquiry about Modern Learning environments and how they change the way we learn. We will continue to work on this in Term 4!

Slippery skating

On Thursday 4th September the senior school went to alpine ice.Alpine ice is a place where you go ice skating.First of all when we jumped onto the ice we all started skating and most of us slipped over.
We all enjoyed slipping skating and winning prizes.

Some of us found in very tricky but we all gave it a go.At the end we were very excited because we got an extra 10 minutes on the ice ice baby.Over all we had the best day ever.

We had lots of fun at alpine ice and we think you will have fun solving these word problems. The ice has mixed up these letters and we need you to put them back.
