As part of this term's focus on 'innovation', your child will be working on an innovation inquiry as part of their home learning. They were VERY keen to do an at-home inquiry, so I have allowed them to do this. We will be working on a different inquiry in class as part of our learning.
They filled out a form in Week 4 which outlines their inquiry, this should have been stuck into their homework book.
At school, we came up with a whole lot of different innovations (e.g. telephone, medicine, vehicles etc), then each student picked something they wanted to learn more about. They then came up with a question that they wanted to find the answer to. Some students have chosen to work alone; some in pairs and others in groups of 3. The expectation is that the more students in the group, the more work that should be there. They can present it in any way they choose.
We have been learning how to summarise information in our own words, by using 'headings' and 'trigger words'. This will enable the students to clearly understand the information they are researching.
As this is a self-directed inquiry the focus is very much on the students managing their time and their resources. We will be doing some work on it in class but the majority of the research needs to be completed at home.
It is really important that this is not a stress at home. It is merely an opportunity for the students to find out more about something they are interested in.
We will be presenting our inquiries to the class on Thursday 11th September (Week 8).
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Wicked Week 5!
On Monday the start of our wicked week, we heard about what we were doing for our innovation inquiry. We have started collecting information already but some speedy people have already started a bit of the work!
On Tuesday the pop-up library opened. The real library got pulled down last holidays so we have moved it into a small spot in the hall as a pop-up library. We were going to go to the library on Monday but it was being set up again after the quiz night. So some people decided to to go at lunch time. We also had Mrs Glasson for Tuesday because Miss Falkner was sick.
On Wednesday we had a relaxing normal day with heaps of the novel! Only a few chapters to go..
The busiest day of the week was definitely yesterday with the poetry competition. There was so much stress on everyone. Everyone did so well but only three or four people got chosen. These people got chosen: Beth, Issy, Estella and Owen but we had lots of runners up. Mrs Allen (our judge) did so well because it was a hard decision. So well done team 27.
We have a exciting Friday ahead of us! Great work team 27.

Year 5/6 Poetry Finals
The senior school poetry finals are next Tuesday (Week 6) at 1.30 in the hall. Our finalists are: Estella (Year 5), Issy, Owen and Beth (Year 6). Parents of finalists are welcome to join us for the competition! We are so proud of our finalists!
Aiming high!
We have decided to aim for 6000 blog views! When we get there Miss Falkner says we can have a shared lunch. We know that we will all have to contribute in order to make this happen! 30 students all working together will make it happen!

Week 3 and 4
Welcome to week 3 and 4 this is Alice and James R. This week is maths week so we had lots of different mathematical challenges. We had to create a poster including numbers and shapes that are important to us. We did number posters on a number and we had to write everything we know about that number. Also Miss Falkner gave us an answer and we had to come up with a problem.
Today is Miss Dunbar's last day before she becomes an air hostess for Air New Zealand. We will miss her.
We also had a 'dance party' where we learnt to dance with a partner. If you ever go dancing beware James twirls you way too fast.
We are enjoying doing information reports for reading and writing. We are also
looking forward to mini innovation inquiries.
That sums up week 3 and 4. See you back here next week!
